Review: IKore Aeronautics 28mm Cars

I back a few KickStarters and when i saw the opportunity to get some modern vehicles that were not from the dollar store or repurposed from the Cars movie range i jumped on it.

I backed for 12 vehicles.

The first minor annoyance was i told them my new address in January and got a confirmation that they had updated it. but the package went to the old flat. this could have been a nightmare as the property managers have sucked badly and they could have just ditched it, but i got them ok, but had to drive to their office with my 4 month old which was a pain. the box was on its last legs and was not sturdy enough for the weight of the models but thankfully nothing was lost.

First impression. when i saw the vehicles they were amazing, the detail on top is super crisp and i was really looking forward to putting them together.... and then i turned them over. the bottom of these models is rough. it reminds me a lot of early 90s resin models where you spend most your time cleaning them.

it looks like they used the casting method where you fill up to the line of the mold and then as the resin cures it recedes but leaves a lip, with a dip or dimple but overall its ok. the problem is that they may not have been very clean with this, as you will see a lot of extra crap on the models. Or you overfill then you have to grind back. you need less rubber this way as its a one piece mold usually. a larger mold that had more of the bottom of the vehcile covered but with a large pour hole and a sprue (as you can see on some of the wheel sprues), would have less issues, but more chance of bubbles or defects.

i would have preferred them to use the method i used to use when the exwife and I ran Ironhalo bases and use something to level off the top, like a piece of perspex. i have not seen this much but i learned it from Hirstarts years ago, and it meant that our bases were nice and smooth on the back - Video here (we did not use glass, we used perspex as it did not break and it was cheap to get) Now it may be that there set up cannot manage that, but i think it would have made the models nice. or even, do a mold that covers the bottom, with a large pour lug, which would leave much less to cut off and clean.

Now i know they had a huge kickstarter and so this does not help quality control, its just a pity as the quality of the top of the models is outstanding.

compare to the recent battle at the farm kickstarter that arrived from Fogau miniatures. there was no cleaning to do at all, i mean nothing. now its a simpler mold, but the bottom is super clear and flat, amazing. i will be doing a review of these later.

any way so here are each of the vehicles, my thoughts etc. I will be asking the creators to replace a couple of the worst ones, so i will let you know the outcome.

Security 4x4

This was the one i was most looking forward to, and unfortunately its the worst.

as you can see the images from the top and side are amazing, crisp as hell, and what you would expect for 10 pounds (or close to $25 NZD). the wheels have some flash, but nothing over the top, the pour lug is exactly what i would expect, and it wont be an issue.

The Bottom:

as you can see, major retraction of the resin. this tells me they may not have poured enough resin, so when it receded, it too away detail. the wheel holes are pointless and the side detail is actually ruined, as it has details right on teh bottom that are missing. this is one i am asking for a replacement.

Luxury 4x4

Again really nice on the top, very crisp, nothing to worry about. Wheels look fine as well. Slight finger print or brush mark on the windscreen but its resin and nothing unusual.

Bottom

Better than the other one, and i can fix this without a huge drama. the wheel holes are ruined, but it wont take much sanding to clean up the edges, though i will have to be careful not to hit the main detail.

Classic Car

Again no issues with the top, no bubbles etc. very clean.

The bottom.

this one had too much resin, as you can see there is a heap to grind off, especially at the back where the car angles backwards, and teh front. i am going to have spend an age grinding this off and again the wheel holes are ruined. this is one i want a replacement for.

Delivery Van.

Usual, very crisp on top, no issues whatsoever.

Bottom:

a lot of receding resin, wheel holes are useless, and a lot of overflow resin to be ground off at the rear. the front bottom has a couple of issues, but nothing to worry about. more work thani would like to do, but this one is a keeper, as its one of the better ones.

Muscle Car.

Again no complaints with the top, beautful even. Serious finger print on teh windscreen, which is annoying but fixable.

Bottom

Just like the classic car but actually worse, with even more to clean up. again one i would like to replace.

People Mover:

Again perfect on the top.

Bottom.

Recession no too bad, fixable. a bit too much resin on the front and back i will need to grind, and i can probably drill out the wheel holes. One of the better ones and one of the easiest to get workable.

Pickup truck

Top, as usual is fine, just stunning. Wheels are nice, crisp molds which is good.

Bottom.

some of the worst recession of resin but its not ruined any detail. a bunch to grind off the front and back and i will have to be careful to not kill any detail, but its salvageable. will need to drill the wheel holes, but they may be fine.

Pursuit Cruiser

Again nothing to complain on the top, wheels look good as does the siren etc. bit of marking on teh windscreen but livable.

Bottom.

Big recession but its not ruined any detail. i will need to grind the front and back and be careful on the sides as there is a lot of bubbling. Wheel holes will be a bit of a pain. Fixable. the back will need a little fixing to make it level as well.

Small Car.

The only one with actual issues on top, some bubbling on the bonnet (hood), and a hairline on the front of the roof, but otherwise its fine.

Bottom

Like the others a lot of recession, but no damage to the sides, stuff to grind front and back and sides to tidy. wheels will need to be jerry rigged.

SUV

normal awesomeness on top, bit of a mark on the windscreen but not the worst. Wheels are fine.

Bottom:

A bit like the other SUVs but not as bad, sides need smoothing but the front and back have a tone of resin to remove but its far enough back i can do this without risking the detail. Wheels just need tidying, no drilling needed.

Taxi:

Old school new york taxi. very nice detail on top, and the accessories look fine. but the model is actually warped. you cannot see it very well but its more a parallelogram than a rectangle.

Bottom.

Lots of recession and some of the side detail is actually missing, front and back dont need grinding but around the wheel wells will.

As its warped i will need a replacement.

Tuktuk

Nice little vehicle, reminds me of being in Delhi on holiday.

Top is fine, tiny hair or something on the back but nothing you would care about.

Bottom

Fixable with some sanding to clear up the mess, but the annoyance is the front where the tripod wheel is meant to fit needs to be properly fixed or it will not be flat, thats a bit anoying as a its a key part.
