WIPTW 2020 #5 - Week 7

A good week all round, i finished some terrain, and got a couple of models done and some more work on a couple of competition pieces, while also have a great work week, and celebrating my daughters birthday friday.

If i can maintain a routine like this we will get through a bunch of stuff.

One thing i have to work on is that i need to thin my paints more or get them smoother. they seem fine from a normal distance and even up close but photos make my painting look awful. They look so much nicer in person. its almost disheartening putting up pics, which only seem to show how bad my painting is.

WIPTW - Rules

  1. Keep track of what i have painted

  2. Can only buy half of what i have painted

So what have i painted since the last update:

2 models painted, simple paint jobs, but finished is finished. I also got 4 pieces of terrain done, which a week ago were only base coated.

Purchased and delivered:

I did not buy anything this week, though a couple of kickstarters i had backed finished.

i got a kickstarter delivered, that i had completely forgotten about (which is one reason for these rules, too many models). My crippled god foundry kickstarter arrived, giving me an awesome Nosferatu model, and other monsters and some cool heroes. they should work well for Frostgrave 2.0 later this year.

Working on:

I have a bunch on the go like always. I have nearly finished the billboard piece i am working on, and about to undercoat the TT combat comms tower. I am working on the block gang for dredd, which i need to blitz out the next two weeks and go more done on my 2 competition pieces. going to be tight to get them finished, but being pushed is the fun bit.

Stats YTD:

Starting to build a bit of a buffer and so far there is nothing large i want to buy. While i have a surpus on the terrain side, i definitely don’t want to buy more as i still have heaps to assemble, let alone paint.

Pictures:

Oola Bint - A nice model but the cast lets it down as the face came out quite soft (like the east meg spy from last week). I like this character as i recall reading the original story a long time ago (possibly decades ago), so its nice to have the physical model (her husband is up next).

i painted her corvus black with abaddon black shade and exile blue added to the corvus for the highlights. I used the Scale 75 leather colours for her bag. Came out nice other than the face, but i did what i could for the cast. you can see how bad it is in the inset.

Patricia - A basic model from Walking dead, not super inspiring but she has been on my desk base coated and inked for weeks. So i knocked her out with some simple edge highlights and the occasional shade to make her pop. only the hair was added, where i used a gold brown and then the GW yellow ink to give some shade.

Foodcourt - this is an awesome set of kits from Knights of Dice. they assembled really well (though i screwed up with the panels on the red one, as i did not realise they were not interchangeable), and this was a blessing as i next tried to do the TT Combat comms tower (a total pig). i like how they are basically the same, but the small differences in trim and the perspex makes them unique. Instructions were easy to follow, and the pieces want to fit together. the only change i made was to trim the bottom lugs on the 3 fins at the top of the lid smaller so it fits in easier, but thats nothing.

The painting was a bit hit and miss. i sprayed a grey and then xenithaled with 3 progressively lighter greys to white, which i am not sure is even visible. the ink wash never took, i am not sure if the spray paint made it run off, or i mixed it badly, but i did multiple passes with a brown wash to get what i wanted. i then stippled platinum white to get some highlights. i think it gives a good impression of old well used faux concrete (plascrete etc). for the spot colours i used what i had in my artist colours which is why the green and red and yellow is a bit different. I still have some accessories i could add to them (chopping boards etc), and graffiti, but i want the entire table done first so i do it in a theme.

i will be buying more from Knights of Dice when i get space in my collection for more terrain.
